Which fishing knot to tie
Start with the job, not a list of fifteen names. Most lost fish at the knot are the wrong knot for the line, or a knot that never got seated.

The improved clinch is fast and familiar on light monofilament. It is a poor default on braid. Braid is slick, and a clinch can pull down without you noticing until the fish loads it. The Palomar uses a doubled line through the eye, which is why it shows up as the braid knot in most practical guides.
Three checks before you trim the tag
- The wraps are stacked, not crossed over each other.
- You wet the knot, then pulled the standing line until it stopped sliding.
- The tag is long enough to trim, not already inside the knot.
A small hook eye is the usual reason a Palomar feels annoying. Doubled line will not pass a tiny eye. Use a uni or improved clinch on that hook if you are on mono or fluoro. If you are on braid and the eye is too small, change the hook or the leader instead of forcing a clinch.

Questions that still come up
- If I only learn one knot, which one?
- Learn the Palomar. It ties a hook or swivel on mono, fluoro, or braid, and you can see when it is seated. Add a joining knot later, when you actually need a leader.
- Does a higher published strength number mean I should switch?
- Not by itself. Break tests disagree, and a poorly seated knot loses more strength than the gap between two decent knots. Match the knot to the line and the eye, then wet it and pull it tight before you cast.
